CLASSIC TEACHING

WITH CONTEMPORARY TECHNOLOGY

Lesson Lasso aims to provide AI tools
that support the timeless teacher-student
educational process and relationships.

AI as the Helper, Not the Hero
Utility, Not Utopia

One glaring limitation for AI success in education is the requirement for an educator with specialized knowledge to steer AI-powered content creation who can simultaneously maintain personalized interactions that are both engaging and relevant to each student's learning journey.

Training a Large Language Model for a product release is not the same as teaching a child how to learn for life. We believe that the primary interface should be between the student and teacher, with technology serving as a supportive tool rather than a replacement.

The inherent limitations of LLM AI interactions which require a "prompt" from someone who has the inherent experience and training to guide both the direction of the content development but also interaction with the students.

We believe the student and the teacher should be the primary interface. Technology should support this relationship, not replace it.

Lesson Lasso: Reining in AI for Safer Learning

Opinions on AI in Education range from utopian fantasy where all of the world's problems are resolved, to apocalyptic catastrophe where the machines rise up and destroy humanity.

Students caught between utopia and apocalypse

Reality will likely lie somewhere between the two, but there are still concerns about centralizing control of teaching through AI, and eliminating human workers—including teachers themselves.

There are already plenty of websites and services using AI to dynamically serve curricula, track student performance and many of these are spectacular products.

But where is the bot-generated content we're feeding students coming from? Who trained the LLMs? What knowledge is excluded from models not due to an agenda, but just because a wise person centuries ago didn't happen to have a blog!?

"Big Tech" must by necessity focus on extremely large revenues to carry the extensive resources they bring to bear on problems. On the other hand, a smaller, less ambitious goal focused on the proven teacher-student relationship might be the optimal strategy for the benefit of the student, the teacher, and society. An advanced, autonomous interactive AI educational option that inserts itself between the teacher and the student might encourage administrators to increase AI spending in lieu of hiring more teachers.

This strategy forces teachers to compete with technology for the attention of students and administrators.

Instead of top-down, centrally-derived content, Lesson Lasso aims to provide collaborative tools to support teachers, students and parents. This project is about developing a common resource for educators and content-creators to share templates, tricks and tools that keep the ChatBots well-behaved, and the students well-informed.
